Find Oahu's Pet-Friendly Shelters

The State of Hawaii’s Civil Defense program in partnership with Hawaiian Humane Society offers a list of pet-friendly emergency shelters. Gov. Linda Lingle and Hawaiian Humane Society announced 55 statewide shelters designated for people with pets.

What You Need To Bring To The Shelter

Animals will not be admitted to a pet-friendly emergency shelter without a crate or carrier (one per pet only) that’s large enough to accommodate the pet comfortably. Pets need an ID tag, collar and a leash, as well as a week supply of the following: food, medications and litter for cats.

Pet shelters are in separate rooms or buildings on public school campuses where emergency shelters for people are. The animals will be cared for by Humane Society volunteers. Hurricane season is in full swing and more volunteers are needed to help. On Oahu, call 356-2216 to volunteer. For additional information about disaster planning, contact 356-2247.

Volunteers Needed For Pet Shelter Managers - 2010 Training Schedule

The Hawaiian Humane Society is looking for volunteers who want to become specially trained emergency pet shelter managers (PSM). As pet shelter managers, you will be on the front line to provide essential care to our island's pets in the case of a disaster. You will learn standard operating procedures for operating an emergency pet shelter, animal handling, and other important skills required to carry out this unique volunteer position.

We had a successful inaugural year of training in 2009, and plan on continuing that trend in 2010! Our volunteers fine tuned their skills, along with our staff, when high surf conditions in December 2009 led to the opening of emergency pet shelters on island. We need your help should disaster strike, please contact the Hawaiian Humane Society's Volunteer Coordinator Sharon MacQuoid at (808) 356-2216 or via email smacquoid@hawaiianhumane.org.
